Daihats-WHO?
Daihatsu, it is a brand that has been around for over a century, yet it has never really thrived in the UK in the same way that other manufacturers have, maybe that is because Toyota are Daihatsu’s parent company and they don’t really see the benefit to crossing markets, Daihatsu announced that they would cease exporting their cars to Europe. You can still get Daihatsus in Britain though it would have to be second hand, so lets take a look at some Daihatsus.
The Daihatsu Grand Move
The Daihatsu Grand Move was only produced for 6 years, from 1996 to 2002, it is a Mini MPV with 5 doors and it is related to the Daihatsu Cherade. There were 2 petrol engines available including 1.5 litre HE-EP straight 4 and a 1.6 litre HD-EP straight 4. Whilst they are available on the second hand market they are still pretty rare as not that many were sold here in the first place. From a quick search I reckon you could pick one up for for around £700. The Grand Move isn’t exactly favoured when it comes to reviews. However those who have actually owned it seem to think highly of it going off the autotrader user ratings.
The Daihatsu Sirion
The Daihatsu Sirion is a bit more desirable and something you would expect to see on UK streets. They were produced from 1998 till 2011, through that time they pumped out 3 different generations of the car. You can get an equivalent in the Perodua Myvi if you want the new version of the Daihatsu Sirion, Perodua is a Daihatsu sister company and the Myvi is essentially just a re-badged Sirion. For a second hand Diahatsu Sirion in the UK you would be looking at anywhere between £1,195 and £4,000.
The Daihatsu Sportrak
The Daihatsu Sportrak is probably our favourite Daihatsu. It’s fairly small but it has a great high driving position so you get a great view of the road. It is classed as a Mini SUV and it only has 2 doors. It is very rugged looking, as if it could really handle itself off road, and that it can. It can be bought as a 4×4 and it is also a pleasure to drive around the city, with its smaller than usual for an SUV size, helping you navigate in tight driving situations. The Daihatsu Sportrak is getting on now though, so you may struggle to find them, they were first put into production in 1989, and it was discontinued in 1998 to be replaced by the Daihatsu Terios which is also well worth a look if you are after a good second hand mini SUV.
The Daihatsu YRV
It seems that Daihatsu like the MPV and Mini SUV kind of cars for the YRV is another that comes under one of those categories. It was a mini MPV that was made by Daihatsu from 2000 to 2005 as he successor to the Daihatsu Grand Move that we looked at earlier. The YRV received its fair amount of criticism with many drivers complaining about the YRV’s remote steering at certain speeds. For a second hand Daihatsu YRV you will be looking at spending anything from 500 to 2,700.
The Daihatsu Terios
The Terios is another SUV from Daihatsu however this one is a little bigger than the Sportrak and it has 5 doors instead of 2. The Daihatsu Terios is now in its second generation a model which is closely related to the seven seater Toyota Rush as well as a short wheel base version called the Perodua Nautica. The main selling point of the Terios was its buy it new price, it was one of the cheapest cars around with 4×4 capabilities, however as with the rest of the Daihatsu models, you can not get a new one yet you can rest assured that the second hand Daihatsu Terios is pretty cheap to say the least.
